Nighttime bioluminescence kayak tour on the Salish Sea near Whidbey Island

Nighttime Bioluminescence Kayak Experience

Experience one of Whidbey’s most unforgettable summer nights on the water.

As darkness settles over Puget Sound, launch into calm waters where every paddle stroke has the potential to reveal shimmering flashes of natural bioluminescence beneath your kayak. Surrounded by the quiet of a moonless night and a sky full of stars, you'll experience the magic of Whidbey after dark in a way few people ever do.

Perfect for beginners and experienced paddlers alike, this relaxed two-hour tour explores protected shoreline waters where bioluminescence is often found. We stay close to shore and paddle at an easy pace, giving you time to take in the glow, the night sounds, and the peaceful beauty of the island.

Your guide will share the science behind this remarkable natural phenomenon and help you discover the tiny marine organisms that create the glow. Because bioluminescence is part of the natural world, every tour is unique. Water conditions and marine activity change from night to night, making each experience one of a kind.

Available only on select summer nights around the new moon for the best viewing.
