Birdwatching Kayak Tour of Penn Cove

2019 DATES:

  • Saturday April 13th (Sunday April 14th as the rain date)

  • Saturday September 21st (Sunday Sept 22nd as the rain date)

Join us for a morning of birdwatching and kayaking around Penn Cove on Whidbey Island. Penn Cove is an official IBA, an Important Bird Area, meaning it is a site that has met a criteria that is “critical for birds during their breeding, wintering, and migration” by Washington Audubon, with assistance from Washington Dept. of Fish and Wildlife. Penn Cove, a large and protected salt water cove, is a haven for aquatic birds.  This trip is lead by a birding guide who identifies and discusses the birds and their habitat and a kayak guide for safety and paddling instruction. We provide walkie-talkies to guests so they can communicate easily with the bird guide while on the water.

We offer this special outing only in the spring and fall so that we observe a wider variety of birds during their seasonal migrations.

This trip launches from Mueller's Park on the west side of Penn Cove, approximately a quarter mile from the historic Captain Whidbey Inn. A WA State Discover Pass is required to park there. Once we launch, we will paddle and observe for approximately 3 hours.  We may or may not take a break on a beach to stretch our legs; that can be decided by the group, which is limited to a maximum of 10 people.

Cost: $89 per paddler, plus WA State sales tax
Duration: approximately 3.5 hours, includes a brief beach break
Time: 9:00am
Location: Mueller Park Beach Access, 2099-2111 Madrona Way, Coupeville, WA 98239

*We must have a minimum of 4 guests to run a Birdwatching tour.  If there are fewer than 4 people, we reserve the right to ask guests to reschedule or to pick another tour.
**We are happy to schedule other dates for custom birdwatching kayak tours for private groups of
between 4 and 10 people. Other locations are possible too, such as Cranberry Lake in Deception Pass Park.
