2019 KAYAK CAMPS FOR ADULTS AND TEENS
Intro to Kayaking for Adults
This course is designed for both the casual paddler and those interested in ocean touring. While the course is perfect for the beginner, anyone who has never had formal instruction will benefit. We’ll cover: types of craft, outfitting & gear, transport, best launch sites on Whidbey, and some basic navigation such as currents, tides, and weather. We will also teach safe ways to enter and exit a kayak, self and assisted rescue techniques, and basic paddle strokes. Participants must be comfortable with deep, over-your-head water while wearing a personal flotation device (PFD) and having some upper-body strength will make some exercises easier. Participants will get wet! This class is an excellent intro to kayaking, but does not imply any certification or infer any skill qualification.
Bring: A hat with a brim, a towel, sunscreen, and a bottle of water. Please wear comfortable clothes/layers that can get wet (synthetic fabrics; not cotton) and/or a bathing suit. Wetsuits/drysuits are highly recommended but not required. Drysuits can be rented from the Kayak Academy (see below for link). A thermos with a warm drink for after the class is recommended.
Instructors: Whidbey Island Kayaking owners and guide(s). Sufficient staff will be on hand to ensure each participant receives personal attention.

**When booking online, only the first class session will be shown on the booking software, but the class will be a total of four sessions.
Paddling Skills for Teens
No previous kayaking experience is needed for this fun-filled water-orientated camp! Our experienced guides will introduce participants to basic water safety and sea kayaking skills including: types of craft, outfitting & gear, wet exits, self and assisted rescue, key paddle strokes, and bracing. But it’s not all work - expect to get wet and have fun playing games like ‘kayak polo’ and ‘kayak sponge tag.’ Participants must be comfortable with deep, over-your-head water while wearing a personal flotation device. They must also be able to pull oneself up onto the deck of a pool from the deep end without use of steps or ladders. This class is an excellent intro to kayaking, but does not imply any certification or infer any skill qualification. Min 4/Max 8
What To Bring: hat with a brim, towel, sunscreen, and water. Wear comfortable clothes that can get wet (synthetics dry faster) and/or a bathing suit.
Lead Instructor: Travis Kulcsar is a white water raft guide turned sea kayak guide. He has paddled around the world from the Grand Canyon to New Zealand. He loves paddling new water--rivers or open water; yet coming to Whidbey Island has been a blessing to him because he loves to share this magical place with others. Travis coaches childrens’ swim programs and this will be his 4th year leading the teen kayak camp for Whidbey Island Kayaking.

We can be available for private instruction and shorter key skill sessions, but we get very busy during the summer. We are hoping to add some other smaller sessions for later in the summer, but in the meantime, please email us at email@example.com and include what exactly you need help with and we're happy to discuss options with you.
